Treating Trauma

News Letter

Educational Resources

Traumatic events such as armed conflict, natural disaster, crime and abuse often lead to long term physical and psychological injury for untold numbers of both children and adults. The Vira Foundation is a Non-Denominational, Non-Profit Organization dedicated to the belief that those who’ve endured such experiences contain the ability to heal themselves and recover true peace of mind.

Research has proven that techniques such as yoga, meditation and breath control benefit those who suffer from the long term effects of Traumatic injury, helping them reclaim their humanity and evolve beyond the consequences of their injuries- consequences that without intervention might otherwise lead to a lifetime of suffering.

By supporting The Vira Foundation you help sponsor classes in yoga, meditation, deep relaxation and breath control for returning Veterans as well as disadvantaged children and adults in need of these services. Early intervention relieves internal suffering and restores individuals to their true potential, healing them, their families and the communities they inhabit...
More information on the use of these techniques for the treatment of trauma.

Dr Andrew Annand is a Verteran of the United States Marine Corps and a Physician.  He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology but came to believe that true healing required an understanding of the human experience beyond the scope of science and medicine. He began teaching yoga as a volunteer in a local "Vets helping Vets" initiative and quickly recognized that yoga offered a uniquely effective path for physical, mental and spiritual recovery from traumatic injury. His goal to bring yoga out of the studios, onto the streets and into the lives of those who can least afford it, inspired him to create the Vira Foundation in 2008. He continues to serve as its Medical Director and still teaches many of the classes.
